LeDroit Park/ Bloomingdale/ Eckington (The 3 Sisters)
Walk Score – 92 (very walkable)
The 3 sisters is a set of three small neighborhoods along Florida Ave (originally Boundary Road) that depending on who you ask, starts and stops in different places. Yet all three are full of history, charm, and just plain FUN!
LeDroit Park begins at the far eastern end of the U Street Corridor at Howard University. It is one of DC’s first suburbs in the 1870’s, LeDroit Park has become one of the most sought after neighborhoods in DC. Internationally-known comedian Jackie “Moms” Mabley, US Senator of Massachusetts Edward “Mo” Brooke, Howard Medical School founder Dr. Ernest Y Williams, famous educator Dr Anna Julia Cooper, AFL-CIO founder Samuel Gompers, poet Paul Laurence Dunbar and film and stage star Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero (aka; Chita Rivera) all lived in LeDroit Park.
Bloomingdale is known for it’s beautiful turrets, which were featured in the opening credits of Netflix’s “House of Cards”. Bloomindale is the home of Big Bear Cafe, The Pub and the People, The Boundary Stone, Tiber Creek Wine Bar and several other delicious local eateries. But the most famous Bloomingdale feature is Atticus Crispus Park. Several local residents decided to use the land within the block behind their homes as a park and dedicate it to Atticus Crispus. It’s a beautiful landscaped park that’s open to everyone today. It truly shows what people can do when they see a need in their neighborhood.
Eckington is the 3rd sister to the east of Bloomindale. Along it’s eastern border is the Metropolitian Branch Trail (MBT) where a whole host of eateries, coffee houses, and breweries have opened up. A popular trail that runs from the US Capitol to Fort Totten, this trail is known as a truly fun place to be. New York may have the highline and Atlanta has it’s beautiful Beltline, but DC’s Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) is fast catching up.
