A historic and nightlife mecca once strolled by the likes of Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, Moms Mabley, Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, Dizzy Gillespie, and later, by DC GoGo Legend Chuck Brown, this neighborhood represents a cultural crossroads of America.
DC’s theatres: The Lincoln, Howard Theatre, and 9:30 Club, have spotlighted superstars Adele, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and The Police (where they honed their live craft before attaining superstar status). The Black Cat, famous for DC’s underground scene, is located at 14th and T Streets NW and is still going strong. Nashville and Detroit may claim to be the music capitals of America, but DC’s U Street towers high in the history books.
Today, the U St. area boasts one of the highest walkability scores in the entire DMV. You literally step outside your door and have access to every urban amenity imaginable. Walk to grocery (Trader Joes, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods), easily access multiple transit options (Green/Yellow Metro, bus lines along 16th, and more), walk to Meridian Hill Park for picnics, grab a bite at the original Ben’s Chilli Bowl, take your pup to the S St. Dog Park, and have a mulititude of gyms (Vida Fitness, Mint) as well as small personal training studios merely steps away. Easily hop on your bike and head to Rock Creek Park to get into nature and be surrounded by green.
U St. also happens to be situated in between Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle, affording residents super easy access to both of those neighborhoods’ amenities. Not to mention having 14 St./Restaurant Row literally at your doorstep. The neighborhood is home to iconic condominium buildings, with rich histories like The Balfour at 16th and U, the Haddon on New Hampshire, and the Northumberland Cooperative at New Hampshire and V.
